NFSU2 online: four meanings

The official servers closed in 2006

Wikipedia and PCGamingWiki both place the shutdown of the original EA online service on 1 August 2006. That date covers the retail PC, PlayStation 2 and Xbox services of that era. I do not describe those servers as something you can log into now.

The same PCGamingWiki network section still documents local LAN. It says up to four players in the ordinary modes and up to six in URL, on UDP port 3658, without UPnP. Split-screen on one PC is a separate mod, not a mode the 2004 retail game shipped.

Browser free roam is a different product

The nfsu2.xyz homepage, read on 3 Nov 2026, describes free roam with friends, online races, crews, cloud saves behind a passphrase, and a ghost mode. Those lines are the project's own description. I link them from the browser page and I do not copy their files.

nfsunderground2.site describes experimental two-player rooms with a room code. That is a PlayStation 2 port, not the PC LAN protocol. Insignia announced Underground 2 as an original-Xbox title, and Pure Xbox reported that announcement, but the Insignia supported-game list I checked on 3 Nov 2026 did not yet include it. I leave the status as announced, not listed.
