NFSU2 LAN multiplayer

This page is the original LAN mode. It is not the browser free-roam room and it is not the 2006 EA service.

What PCGamingWiki still documents

The network section says LAN supports up to four players in ordinary modes and up to six in URL. The port is UDP 3658. There is no UPnP. Split-screen on one PC is a separate mod, not a 2004 menu item.

Wikipedia dates the shutdown of the original online service to 1 August 2006. Opening 3658 does not bring that service back. A VPN can carry the LAN packets between houses. I am not going to pretend that is the same thing as the old matchmaking.

Mods and the browser

PCGamingWiki warns that some mods break LAN. Install one pack at a time if you host. The browser projects use their own servers. Do not forward 3658 for nfsu2.xyz.
